World Council of Churches Letter of Condolences and Solidarity on the Tragic Killings in Arsi Zone, Ethiopia.

“Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good.” (Romans 12:21)

Your Holiness,

Grace, peace, and mercy be upon you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

It is with deep sorrow and profound grief that I write to you upon hearing the tragic news that among the people killed in Arsi Zone, Ethiopia, at least twenty of them may be members of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. This senseless loss of life is a painful reminder of the fragility of peace and the urgent need for reconciliation and the protection of all communities.

On behalf of the World Council of Churches and our global fellowship, I extend heartfelt condolences to you, the clergy, the faithful of your Church, and all affected families. We stand in solidarity with you in this time of mourning, and we lift up in prayer all those impacted by this violence, asking the Lord to grant them comfort, healing, and strength.

The WCC condemns all acts of violence and expresses our unwavering

support for efforts toward justice, peace, and communal harmony. We pray for wisdom and courage for leaders at all levels to address the root causes of conflict, to promote dialogue, and to ensure the protection of human life and dignity.

In this time of mourning and pain, the WCC stands in unwavering solidarity with the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and with all the people of Ethiopia. We continue to pray for courage, compassion, and lasting peace — trusting in God’s promise that “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4)

May God’s grace sustain your Church and the people of Ethiopia, and may the Holy Spirit guide all communities toward reconciliation, unity, and lasting peace. Please be assured of our continued prayers, solidarity, and pastoral support during this grievous period.

With every blessing in Christ,

Rev. Prof. Jerry Pillay
